Not guilty, your honour

Rob Smith takes a fresh look at our terrible tale by putting the Lambton Worm on trial. Are story villains always guilty as charged, or are they sometimes misunderstood?

And they all lived happily ever after.... or so the story goes. It is one of the first story conventions we learn: stories begin with Once upon a time and end with And they all lived happily ever after. But take a closer look at those stories and everyone didn’t live happily ever after, did they? What happened to the Giant in ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ for example? Or the Troll in ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’? And where is the Wolf from ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ or ‘The Three Little Pigs’? There’s no happily ever after for these fairytale characters!
