Springboard Stories - Plucky ducks

Plucky ducks

Encourage some exciting investigative reporting with an in-depth look at the plight of 29,000 little yellow plastic ducks.

In 1992, a consignment of plastic ducks accidentally fell from a container ship in the middle of the North Pacific Ocean, midway between Washington State in North America and the northern tip of Japan (44.7ºN, 178.1ºE). These tiny ducks turned out to be very useful to oceanographers as they told them more about our oceans’ currents than they had ever learned before. However, they also highlighted a growing problem: that our seas are rapidly turning into plastic soup.
