The Edmond Albius story

Use this resource with the Madagascan vanilla lesson from our Madagascar topic.

At the age of 12, a slave boy, on the island of Madagascar discovered a technique for pollinating vanilla orchids quickly and profitably. Edmund Albius' technique revolutionised the cultivation of vanilla and meant that it became possible to grow vanilla beans away from their native Mexico. However, poor Albius never got the recognition he deserved – download and hand out his story.
