A season of sounds

Explore the versatility of percussion instruments to make magical winter music.

Many composers have been inspired by the seasons to create atmospheric music. Classical and modern pieces, popular songs and film soundtracks all feature musical descriptions of the changing weather. This issue's theme of ‘Snow’ is a particularly good one to link to music activities. Winter weather offers so many contrasts that can be investigated through sound – stormy nights, a peaceful blanket of snow, spiky icicles dripping as they melt and, of course, Christmas bells.
