Can we separate the history from the myth surrounding Boudicca, Queen of the Iceni?
Take a trip to London’s Westminster Bridge and you will see a bronze-cast Boudicca, standing triumphant alongside her daughters on a battle chariot armed with scythes. Commissioned by Prince Albert, the iconic statue was designed in the mid-19th century by sculptor and engineer Lord Thomas Thornycroft. With her arms raised to the skies, Thornycroft’s Boudicca looks, for all the world to see, like the perfect picture of victory. It is a compelling image. But what does the statue tell us about this ancient tribal queen? And does it tell the truth?
