Taking a critical look at our attitudes to food can reveal some interesting findings. Things aren’t always as straightforward as they seem.

Food waste in the Western World is a major issue and at a time when half the world goes hungry, the idea that that we waste so much food is a difficult one to confront. Research last year showed that in the UK we throw away 7.2 million tonnes of food and drink from our homes each year. That’s enough to fill Wembley Stadium! It costs us £12 billion a year and most of the wasted food could been eaten. (Big numbers can be hard to understand; it’s a little easier to see how big that number is when it’s written down – £12,000,000,000.) And apart from it being a terrible waste it’s bad for our environment too – just think about the energy used in food production. So, why does food waste happen and how can we help stop it?
