From Roman law to programming, a topic on Codes can be very far reaching, so start at the very beginning and see where your journey takes you.
The word ‘code’ is a wonderful example of how the English language has changed over time. A topic on codes is a good opportunity to talk about how languages evolve. Words change their meaning and new words appear. Words just like clothes can go out of fashion. Can the children think of any examples? Suggest 'selfie' or 'muggle' as new words and 'groovy' or 'thou' as words we no longer use. We also adopt words from other languages. Can children think of any examples? Suggest 'pyjamas' or 'bungalow'.
The essence of the word code has essentially remained the same but if we follow its route through time, we can see how it has evolved to become a very 21st century word. Code was first taken from the Latin word ‘codex’, which simply means a set of rules or laws – and we still use code to mean this today.
